Chapter 18

“So far, so good,” Alexis said when she glanced back to make certain no one had followed them. To give the illusion they were flying out from JFK, Lynn dropped off her car at the airport. Everyone went inside the terminal with their luggage before slipping out the side door and piling into a rental car.

“I told you it would work.” Lynn glanced to Alexis in the passenger seat. The way the golden rays leaped through the windshield illuminated Alexis’s fair skin, giving her an angelic appearance in the sunlight. Lynn forced her gaze to return to the road even though she knew she could stare at her wife the entire day without ever tiring of the view. She took a quick peek in the rear view mirror to look at the girls in the backseat. Morgan and Calista were chattering, apparently about something Calista was showing Morgan on her phone. Lynn merged onto I-78 West, smiling when she caught Alexis’s stare. “I can’t believe we’re driving over 600 miles simply to purchase a puppy.”

“Well, you could have always found her some other kind of puppy at the shelter,” Alexis reminded her.

Lynn defiantly shook her head, “Absolutely not. I know they need homes too, but Cali wanted a Dalmatian when you and I first met. I think it’s high time we give her the puppy she’s always wanted. Besides, we could use a vacay of sorts.”

Alexis leaned forward, turning on the radio. She giggled when “‘I’m Sexy and I Know It,’” blared from the car stereo, and Lynn instantly joined in to sing the conceited lyrics. Alexis turned towards the backseat when she heard Calista chime in on the chorus. With a shake of her head, she sighed when she saw Morgan’s perplexed expression. “Cali, you’ve been listening to momma’s iPod far too much.”

“Hey it’s a cool song.” Lynn laughed. “Come on, Lex. Sing!” She reached over and pushed against Alexis’s shoulder with the palm of her hand. “Tell us how sexy you are. Be loud and proud about your sexiness.”

“Yeah, Mommy, sing with us!” Calista twirled in the backseat, slinging her hair in a circle while attempting to perform the Muppet dance. Morgan giggled as she too tried to join in, even though she was clueless when it came to the words. “Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle,” Calista sung as loud as she could.

Alexis rolled her eyes, finally joining in on the chaotic madness towards the end of the song. Lynn watched with amusement as Alexis shimmied in her seat while sliding the palm of her hand all the way down the center of her chest. “Now you’re getting the hang of it.” By the time the song concluded, everyone was laughing. “That was so much fun.” A song that was all too slow came on the radio next, causing Lynn to voice her displeasure. “Grab my iPod and plug it in so we can have some real music instead of this slow junk.”

“I want to hear Katy Perry,” Calista demanded.
